US MARINE CORPS. RETIRED VETERAN – VIETNAM WAR

The family of Mr. Robert David Ryan, a US Marine Corps. (Ret.) Veteran, requests the presence and participation of the San Antonio Patriot Guard at the services, and the LEO supported procession, and graveside rendering of military honors of their loved one. We are honored to accept this invitation.

Robert D. Ryan, born on February 3, 1936, in Chicago, Illinois, passed away peacefully on August 3, 2026, at the age of 90.

Robert spent his early years in Chicago, where he was employed by the Chicago Tribune newspaper at the iconic Tribune Tower from 1952 to 1953. Driven by a passion for sports, he traveled to Montreal, Quebec, to pursue an ice hockey career. At just 17½ years old, he achieved a lifelong dream by playing a game at the historic Montreal Forum, the home ice of the NHL Canadiens.

Following his time in Canada, Robert returned to Chicago and answered the call to serve his country. Weeks after turning 18, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He dedicated over two decades to military service, bravely serving as a Marine Infantry Unit Leader during foreign combat deployments in 1965, 1968, and 1972. Robert earned an Honorable Retirement as a Master Sergeant in April 1978 after a distinguished career of global service. His final military assignment brought him to San Antonio, Texas, where he proudly served with the Marine Corps Recruiting Service.

Robert was deeply proud of his heritage and remained ever mindful of his Ryan family roots in County Tipperary, Ireland. He cherished his heritage, traveling to Ireland twice throughout his life. In his free time, he found great joy in his favorite hobby, listening to and sharing Irish folk music. Robert’s dedication to his country, his adventurous spirit, and his love for his roots will be forever remembered by his family, friends, and fellow Marines.
