US NAVY RETIRED VETERAN

The family of Mr. Michael Edward Gonitzke, a US Navy (Ret.) Veteran, requests the presence and participation of the San Antonio Patriot Guard Riders at the services, and the LEO supported procession, and graveside rendering of military honors of their loved one. We are honored to accept this invitation.

Michael Edward Gonitzke, a cherished family man, decorated naval veteran, and a pilar of his community, passed away on February 09, 2026, at the age of 70. Born on July 10, 1955, in Washington D.C., Michael’s journey through life was marked by an unwavering commitment to his country, his family, and the simple pleasures that brought joy to his days.

After a distinguished career in the navy, where he served his nation with honor and valor, Michael retired to San Antonio, Texas. It was here that he embraced the warmth of the community and the love of his devoted family. Michael leaves behind his beloved wife, Donna Gonitzke, with whom he shared many decades of laughter and love. His legacy will live on through his children, Shaun Gonitzke, Ashley Knight and her husband Travis Knight, and Katie Valdez and her husband Jacob Valdez, who will forever cherish the lessons and memories he imparted.

As the supportive brother to Stephen Gonitzke and Suzanne Deskins, Michael was a source of strength and camaraderie. His influence extended to his adoring grandchildren, Landon Knight, Elliot Gonitzke, Corbin Knight and June Valdez, who will miss their grandfather’s enduring presence and the stories that only he could tell.

Michael’s life was one of engagement and service. His time in the Navy was just the beginning of a lifelong dedication to his fellow service members, many of whom became cherished long-lasting friends. He proudly served his country during the Gulf War, which required much time away from his family, a sacrifice he carried with strength and quiet resolve. These sacrifices reflect his deep sense of duty and love for his nation. The discipline, strength, and integrity he carried throughout his military career remained with him throughout his life, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew him.

Away from his commitments, Michael found solace and entertainment in the simple things. An avid sports fan, he relished the opportunity to cheer on his favorite teams, the Dallas Cowboys and San Antonio Spurs in particular, and share his passion with friends and family. His love for classic westerns was well known, and many evenings were spent with Donna by his side, enjoying the tales of the old frontier.

Michaels passing, due to an underlying heart condition, has left a void in the hearts of those who knew him. Yet, the stories of his kindness, integrity, and his unwavering commitment to his loved ones will continue to inspire and guide us. His life was a testament to the values he held dear: loyalty, honor, and the unbreakable bonds of family.

As we say farewell to Michael Edward Gonitzke, we take comfort in knowing that his was a life-well lived, filled with moments of profound happiness, enduring friendships, and a family that adored him. He will be dearly missed but his spirit will remain with us, guiding us through the days ahead with the same strength and love he showed in life.
