“HOME FOR OUR TROOPS (HFOT’s) KEY AWARD CEREMONY”
The presence and participation of the San Antonio Patriot Guard Riders have been requested to take part in this joyous event. We have been asked to ride in a LEO supported procession and stand a Flag Line for the veteran and family to participate in a “Key Awarding Ceremony” presented by Homes For Our Troops (HFOT). This ceremony will be the final presentation of a specially adapted mortgage free home for Retired Army SSG Rob Geer. In 1996, inspired by a desire to give back to others, Robert Geer enlisted in the Army as an Airborne Infantryman. He liked being a leader, and during five deployments, including two to Iraq and one in Afghanistan, he continued to hone his leadership skills.
On September 28, 2011, during his fifth deployment, Staff Sergeant Geer was serving with Alpha Company, 1-5 INF, 25th Infantry Division as an Infantry squad leader in Panjwai, Afghanistan, when his squad was assigned to clear a compound in a suspected hostile area. While he led his squad in clearing a mud hut, two of his Soldiers stepped on IEDs, which resulted in SSG Geer receiving damage to both legs, hip, and pelvis, left arm injuries, ulnar nerve damage, major tissue damage, and other significant injuries. After initial treatment in Afghanistan, he was transferred to Brooke Army Medical Center, and eventually medically retired.
Robert enjoys spending time with his adult children and five grandchildren. He is an avid billiards player and enjoys being a community pool league member. In his current living condition, he has to navigate multiple sets of stairs and narrow doorways that are challenging due to balance and stability issues from his injuries.
A specially adapted custom HFOT home in an open layout will allow Robert to feel safe and secure, with single-floor access to every room. “Just having a place with more living space will help with my anxiety,” he says. He is looking forward to the shower bench, grab bars, and therapy tub, among other features that will support his daily needs in his new home.
Originally from West Virginia, Robert is choosing to build his home in Texas for the Veteran-friendly atmosphere.
Robert would like to express his gratitude to HFOT donors and supporters. “Thank you! Knowing that so many of you are helping injured Soldiers is wonderful. I will make it my goal to help the next generation of HFOT home recipients by giving back to the organization that is changing my life for the better.”
