US ARMY/MARINE CORPS RETIRED VETERAN – VIETNAM WAR

The family of Mr. Robert M. Kneeland, a US Army/Marine Corps. (Ret.) Veteran, requests the presence and participation of the San Antonio Patriot Guard at the graveside rendering of military honors of their loved one. We are honored to accept this invitation.

Robert Michael Kneeland was born on February 19, 1941, in Boston, Massachusetts. His young life was very challenging and he was placed into foster care from the ages of 8 -17. One thing he enjoyed most during those years was going to the Boy’s Club in Arlington, Massachusetts. There he had lots of fun with all the various games that the boys played. In junior high he worked on a tomato farm making 50 cents an hour!

At 17 he entered the Army on May 2, 1958, and served until April 12, 1961. He then enlisted in the Marine Corps and served from May 22, 1961, to March 31, 1979. Robert (Bob) Kneeland loved the Marine Corps. It gave him structure, purpose, and an opportunity to serve the nation. Bob’s heart and actions certainly reflected the Marine Corps motto of “Semper Fidelis.” Bob was stationed in many different places in the U.S. and overseas. Overseas deployments included Korea, Okinawa, Japan, Cuba, and Vietnam. Among his favorite duty stations in the U.S. were Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. The last duty station for the USMC was in Montana where Bob served on recruiting duty. Bob was awarded a Bronze Star medal from the Marine Corps in January 197. Bob was also awarded a Purple Heart from the Marine Corps in July 1970.

Bob married Valerie Riley in October,1969, and daughter Christine Olivia Kneeland was born on June 4,1976. After 20 years, 10 months and 10 days (as Bob would like to tell people!) Bob chose to retire from the Marine Corps and then moved his family to Austin, Texas. Bob and Valerie divorced in 1986. Bob loved being a father and helping to guide Chrissy as she grew up! Bob and Chrissy had a special close bond and many years of memories growing up that will be cherished forever. Christine married Kris McCorkle on June 18, 1916. Daughters Kate and Hailey gave Bob the opportunity to be a grandparent and Bob was so excited about being in that role! His legacy, values and integrity will live on through Kate and Hailey.

Bob found his second career at the Veterans Administration where he became a computer systems auditor. He also had a 20-year career at the VA and retired from the Veterans Administration in February, 2001.

In his faith walk, Bob surrendered his life to Jesus in the spring of 1992. In the summer of 1992, in an answer to both Bob’s and Linda’s prayers, he met Linda Fredrickson who was also a Jesus follower. They married on August 27, 1994, in a beautiful ceremony at Covenant Presbyterian church, Austin, Texas. They were married for 30 years before Bob went to heaven. They grew in their faith together. One of the joys of their marriage and highlights of their life was going on Christian mission trips to Ukraine under the mission agency of HART from 2001 – 2005. Bob and Linda were also a part of a Christian ministry in Haiti called Jacob’s Well since 2010.

Bob loved the outdoors! In his younger days Bob loved to snow ski! From his time in the military, he also enjoyed parachuting, collecting firearms, making his own bullets, and hunting! Most of all, Bob and Linda loved travelling! They bought an RV and enjoyed so much seeing the U.S. in their RV. Equally exciting were their overseas trips to Europe, the Middle East and South Africa.

We rejoice that Bob is now in the presence of the Father, Jesus and Holy Spirit and he knows perfect love. He has started the greatest adventure of his eternal life! Although our beloved Bob is dearly missed, we will see him again when we ourselves have been called home to heaven!
