US AIR FORCE RETIRED VETERAN – VIETNAM ERA

The family of Mr. Maynard Hayes, a US Air Force (Ret.) Veteran, requests the presence and participation of the San Antonio Patriot Guard at the services and LEO supported procession, and graveside rendering of military honors of their loved one. We are honored to accept this invitation.

Maynard George “Bud” Hayes, age 80, of Schertz, Texas passed away on Sunday, November 26, 2023. Bud was born on December 24th, 1942, in White Salmon, Washington, to William and Mildred (Draine) Hayes. The youngest of three siblings, with an older brother, Dick, and sister, Darla, he spent his early years in Wyoming and Montana, eventually graduating from Clyde Park High School in 1961. Bud initially aimed to become a veterinarian but shifted gears in 1961, joining the US Air Force. His early military service involved working as Security Police, stationed at various bases such as Weathersfield, Mildenhall, and Lakenheath in England. Later, he transitioned into Manpower, serving at locations like Dover, Delaware; Anchorage, Alaska; the Air Force Academy in Colorado; Alconbury A.F.B. in England; and Randolph Air Force Base in Texas.

During his time in Weathersfield, Bud met Jean, his first wife, with whom he had two children, Billy, and Tracy. In 1972, while stationed in Alaska, Bud married his second wife, Sherry, and together they had four children: Scott, Richard, Thomas, and Erin. While in England, Bud and Sherry met and “adopted” Maria. Bud married his third wife, Cheryl, in 1989, expanding his family with Cheryl’s daughter, Danielle.

Bud concluded his military career as a Chief Master Sergeant in 1989. Post-military life saw him briefly working as a probation officer and Middle School teacher before venturing into a successful carpentry career, eventually leading to the ownership of his own trim carpentry business. Bud officially retired in 2015, at the age of 73.

Bud was an extremely generous and compassionate man — who never met a stranger — and was always eager to help a friend in need. He actively participated in his children’s extracurricular activities, coaching little league teams for almost two decades — assisting with the BVYA, and being the maestro of the concession stand — as well as volunteering in various roles during his children’s school years.

Bud was also known as a great communicator — from debriefing Generals, and other high-ranking brass, while in the Air Force, to writing short stories, or the endless stories and jokes he would entertain his family and friends with. He also enjoyed many callings with the LDS church — as Attendance Clerk, working with the church’s Boy Scout troop, teaching Sunday School, working with the Young Men’s group, and serving as a Home Teacher.

Bud was preceded in death by his parents and brother. He is survived by his wife, Cheryl; 8 children – Billy, Tracy, Maria (Mark), Scott (Lisa), Richard (Rebecca), Danielle, Thomas (Christine), and Erin (Mike); 15 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; as well as his sister, Darla, and sister-in-law, Betty.
