US ARMY VETERAN – VIETNAM WAR

The family of Mr. Luther Guadalupe Luera, a US Army Veteran, requests the presence and participation of the San Antonio Patriot Guard at the services, and the LEO supported procession, and graveside rendering of military honors of their loved one. We are honored to accept this invitation.

Luther Guadalupe Luera, 75, of San Antonio, Texas was called home to be with the Lord on July 12, 2025, at his San Antonio residence after a short battle with cancer. Luther was born in San Diego, Texas to Manuel and Josefa Luera on January 6, 1950. Lou, as he was known to family and friends, graduated from Gregory Portland High School in 1968, before enlisting in the U.S Army during the Vietnam War with the 101st Airborne Division, achieving the rank of sergeant while serving in theater. Following his honorable discharge in 1971, he enrolled at Texas A&I University in Kingsville graduating with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. He then began a 30-year career with Southwestern Bell (later AT&T), retiring as a Senior Project Manager in 2009.

Luther is preceded in death by his parents, Manuela and Josefa Luera, brother Cesario Bela, sisters Micaela Fuentes and Nancy Gonzalez. He is survived by his children Lou Daniel (Betty) and Marcia, his grandchildren Abby and Alex, siblings Lloyd (Idalia) Luera and Janie (Tony) Arrendondo, numerous nieces and nephews, and a host of lifelong childhood friends and fraternity service brothers.

Lou was an independent, strong-willed, and exuberant servant leader loved by many. In retirement, he continued to serve the community via his active involvement with Veterans of Foreign Wars Local Post 76 and his alumni fraternity association, Phi Kappa Theta. With both organizations, he offered his boots-on-the-ground service and know-how to generate awareness, increase community service, and raise member participation via various projects such as the PKT’s undergraduate scholarships and grants fundraising respectively. He often rose to the call to participate in various social and charitable causes around town such as the annual MLK parade, and events of national attention such as the call for veterans to join the Standing Rock demonstrations in North Dakota in 2016.

Always active, Lou immersed himself in countless projects. Lou enjoyed woodworking, home improvement projects, horticulture, estate sales and travel. He often collected items to repair and repurpose as gifts to charitable causes. He was an avid movie collector who looked forward to his weekend DIY projects, whether they were at home in his backyard or at his lake retreat in Streetman, Texas.

Lou will be dearly missed by all whose lives he touched, family, friends, co-workers, and fraternity brothers.
