US AIR FORCE VETERAN

The family of Mr. Larry Tyrone Smith, Sr., a US Air Force Veteran, requests the presence and participation of the San Antonio Patriot Guard at the services, and the LEO supported procession, and graveside rendering of military honors of their loved one. We are honored to accept this invitation.

Larry Tyrone Smith Sr., 76, of San Antonio, Texas, passed away on February 20, 2026. He was born on November 3, 1949, in Baltimore, Maryland, to the late Dorothy M. Smith and Curtis W. Smith. Raised in Baltimore, Larry attended Houston Woods High School before embarking on a distinguished life defined by faith, honor, and service.

Larry proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for 24 years, retiring as a Master Sergeant (MSGT) with the 554th Transportation Squadron at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada. During his honorable military career, he served in Vietnam and in Operation Desert Shield/Storm. His leadership, discipline, and unwavering commitment to excellence reflected the strength of his character and his deep sense of honor and duty.

Throughout his 24 years of service, MSGT Smith earned numerous military honors and commendations, including: • Meritorious Service Medal • Air Force Commendation Medal with four oak leaf clusters

• Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with two oak leaf clusters • Air Force Good Conduct Medal with six oak leaf clusters • National Defense Service Medal with one bronze service star • Vietnam Service Medal with four oak leaf clusters • Air Force Overseas Short Tour Ribbon with one oak leaf cluster • Air Force Overseas Long Tour Ribbon • Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon with four oak leaf clusters • USA Noncommissioned Officer Professional Military Education Graduate Ribbon with one oak leaf cluster • Air Force Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon • Air Force Training Ribbon • Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal.

After retiring from the Air Force, Larry continued his life of service by dedicating 20 years to USAA before fully retiring. Whether in uniform or in civilian life, he carried himself with integrity, professionalism, and honor.

Above all, Larry was a man of faith who believed in our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. His faith anchored his life, guided his decisions, and shaped the values he instilled in his family. He believed in living with purpose, strength, and gratitude.

Larry was caring, loving, and strong-willed, with a presence that filled every room. He loved to sing—famously leaving his heartfelt rendition of “Happy Birthday” on the voicemails of family and friends each year. His humor brought joy to many, and he will be remembered for his laughter and warmth. He enjoyed traveling, spending time with family, and was widely known as the best barbecue cook around. He also valued fitness and health, taking pride in staying active and maintaining his strength throughout his life.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Carmen Delgado-Smith; his son, Larry T. Smith Jr. (Michelle); and his daughter, L-Ikera Nicole Retzloff (Jarrod). He was a proud grandfather to Jordan Retzloff, Cyann Retzloff, Irelyn Retzloff, Army 1st Sgt. Ariel Hughes, Aaliyah Green, Leilani Jacobs, Noah Smith, and Nevaeh Smith.

Larry is also survived by his siblings: Melvin Tyree; Gregory Smith (Michelle); Kenneth Smith; Gary Smith (Deneen); Dorothy Napier; Belinda Fitzhugh (Terence); and Regina Lewis (Johnnie), along with numerous nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy M. Smith, and Curtis W. Smith; his brothers Edward Dunton, Curtis Smith Jr., and Reginald Smith; and his sister Deborah Jordan.

Larry’s life stands as a testament to faith in God, honor in duty, and service to both country and family. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the love he shared, and the example he set for generations to come.
