US ARMY VETERAN, VIETNAM WAR

The family of Mr. Kurt L. Barr, a US Army Veteran, requests the presence and participation of the San Antonio Patriot Guard Riders at the LEO escorted procession and graveside rendering of military honors of their loved one. We are honored to accept this invitation.

Kurt Barr, affectionately known as Macedonio Barrientes to those who knew him from his earliest days, was a beacon of joy and kindness in the lives of all who had the pleasure of crossing his path. Born on July 9, 1939, in the vibrant city of San Antonio, TX, Kurt’s journey on this earth came to a peaceful close in the serene town of Cibolo, TX, on June 7, 2024. His departure at the age of 84 marks not an end but a celebration of a life extraordinarily lived, touching countless hearts along the way.

The son of Salvador and Epifania Barrientes, Kurt was the pillar of a loving family. Although preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Santiago Barrientes, Sr., Gilbert Barrientes, and his sister Ruth Hernandez, Kurt’s legacy is carried on by his brother Paul Barrientes & wife Goya, and his adoring nieces, Frances Rivera, Marcela Rivera, Irene Barrientes, and a multitude of other nieces and nephews, each cherishing memories of their beloved uncle. A special note of gratitude is extended to Tony Carrisal, his nephew, & Rudy Rivera his other nephew whose unwavering support was a source of immense comfort to Kurt. His great aunt Dora Barrientes also survives him, a testament to the deep roots and strong bonds of the Barrientes family tree.

Kurt’s dedication to his country was evident through his service in the United States Army from August 1959 to July 1961. As a PFC E3 Infantry turned Armorer, Kurt’s marksmanship earned him the title of Sharpshooter with the Rifle and Recoilless Rifle (106 MM RR). He earned a Sharpshooter Metal. The Korea Defense Service Medal and The National Defense Service Metal. His military discipline and commitment to excellence followed him into his civilian life, where he served faithfully as a Supply Technician at Lackland AFB for 34 years. Upon his retirement in September of 2003, Kurt left behind a legacy of diligence and a work ethic that inspired all who worked alongside him.

Beyond his professional life, Kurt’s heart was always with his family. He relished in the simple joy of gathering with his loved ones, his presence a constant source of warmth and generosity. His passion for the hunt of a good antique was matched only by his love for shopping, each outing an adventure and an opportunity to add to his cherished collection of memories and treasures. Kurt’s hobbies were not mere pastimes; they were extensions of his love for life and the people he shared it with.

To describe Kurt is to speak of love, kindness, and generosity. These were not just qualities he possessed; they were the essence of his being, the core of his soul. He navigated life’s twists and turns with a grace that made the world around him a better place. His actions spoke volumes, and his spirit was a guiding light for all who knew him.

In the words of the great poet Maya Angelou, “Try to be a rainbow in someone’s cloud.” Kurt embodied this sentiment, always striving to be a source of hope and happiness for others. His life was a vivid tapestry of moments that brightened the lives of those around him, a true rainbow in the clouds of anyone fortunate enough to know him.

As we honor the memory of Kurt Barr, let us remember that the measure of a man is not in the number of years he lives, but in the lives he touches. Kurt’s story is not one of sorrow but a narrative of inspiration, urging us all to live with the same boundless love and generosity he so effortlessly displayed. His legacy will forever be etched in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who were graced by his presence. May we all aspire to carry forward the light he so brilliantly shined into the world.
