US ARMY RETIRED VETERAN – VIETNAM WAR

The family of Mr. Guadalupe M. Lopez, a US Army (Ret.) Veteran, requests the presence and participation of the San Antonio Patriot Guard at the services, and the LEO supported procession, and graveside rendering of military honors of their loved one. We are honored to accept this invitation.

Guadalupe Marquez Lopez, age 88, of San Antonio, Texas passed away on Sunday, July 20, 2025. Guadalupe was born in Sanderson, Texas. Born in Sanderson, Texas, on June 27, 1937, to Francisco and Gudelia Lopez, Guadalupe lived a life marked by unwavering dedication, quiet strength, and distinguished service to his country.

He proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and retired as a First Sergeant, a leader known for his valor and mentorship. During his career, 1SG Lopez earned numerous commendations including the Bronze Star Medal with Valor and two Oak Leaf Clusters, Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal with two Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Good Conduct Medal with Silver Knot Device, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. His units were awarded the Army Presidential Unit Citation, Army Meritorious Unit Citation and Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation. Guadalupe served his country with honor and distinction during both wartime and peacetime. His military career took him overseas to Vietnam, Korea, and Germany, and stateside to Fort Hood TX and Fort Dix NJ. He was a proud member of the infantry and armor divisions, demonstrating unwavering dedication across every assignment.

After retiring from the Army, Guadalupe continued serving his country through civil service. He worked in Special Weapons at the former Kelly Air Force Base and later with the U.S. Postal Service in San Antonio, dedicating over 20 years to federal service with the same commitment and discipline that defined his military career. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus in Copperas Cove, TX.

Guadalupe married the love of his life, Maria Eleonor Barron, on October 8, 1960, at San Juan de los Lagos in San Antonio, TX. Their enduring love spanned more than 64 years, a testament to their deep devotion and partnership. Together, they built a life full of family, faith, and unconditional support—leaving behind a legacy of love that continues to inspire all who knew them.

He is preceded in death by his wife Maria; his parents Francisco and Gudelia Lopez; sisters Gudelia Lopez and Tomasa Perez; brother Francisco Lopez Jr.; and grandson Edwardo Gonzalez Jr.

Outside of his military and professional life, Guadalupe had a deep passion for working with his hands. Whether it was restoring cars in the driveway or fixing anything that broke around the house, he took great pride in being his daughters’ personal handyman. From leaky faucets to broken appliances and ceiling fans, no project was too small for him—his quiet dedication and problem-solving spirit brought comfort and care to those he loved most.

He is survived by Children: Patricia Gonzalez, Doris Perez (Joe), and Monica Martinez, Sister: Nieves Lopez, Grandchildren: Joel Solis, Megan Solis, Rebecca Ortiz (Manny), Noah Martinez, Nicolas Martinez, Erica Martinez, Great-grandchildren: Edwardo Gonzalez III, Judel Aldana and Great-great-grandchild: Davina Marie.

Do not hesitate to take a break at any time if you feel you need to get in the shade or get indoors and always ask for help at any time. Also please do not forget your sun screen.

3. Please remember that our mission is to stand tall and silent, and with honor and. NO TALKING, SMOKING, CHEWING OF TOBACCO PRODUCTS, OR CELL PHONE USE IN THE FLAG LINE!

If you choose to fly a Flag on your bike you are SOLELY RESPONSIBLE for ensuring it is secured and not a danger to any other rider or traffic.
