US ARMY – ACTIVE DUTY DEATH

The family of CSM Stephen Michael Henderson, a US Army ADD, requests the presence and participation of the San Antonio Patriot Guard at the services and LEO supported procession, and graveside rendering of military honors of their loved one. We are honored to accept this invitation.

Stephen Michael Henderson, a man known for his infectious laughter and relentless spirit, has completed his final tour of duty here on earth. Born on February 7, 1977, in Wilmington, DE, Stephen’s journey through life was as vibrant and dynamic as his personality. On October 9, 2024, in San Antonio, Texas, he saluted us all for one last time, as cancer concluded his earthly campaign.

Stephen’s life was one of service, dedication, and a touch of mischief. After enlisting in the United States Army from Philadelphia, PA in 1997, he embarked on a career that was as illustrious as it was impactful. Rising through the ranks with the kind of gusto you would expect from a man who tackled everything head-on, he eventually became the Command Sergeant Major for the 5th Recruiting Brigade. Not one to shy away from a challenge, he mastered the art of leadership at the United States Army Sergeants Major Academy Class 68.

His service took him to the rugged terrains of Afghanistan with the 2nd Battalion, 327th Infantry, 1BCT, 101st Airborne Division (AASLT) in 2010, where he served with distinction. Stephen’s chest was a veritable hardware store of military accolades. Among them were the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, and enough medals and badges to make a knight envious. He wore them with pride, but always with a humble smirk, as if to say, “It’s just what I do.”

When he was not jumping out of perfectly good airplanes or racking up medals, Stephen was an endurance running fanatic, an Eagles Football enthusiast, a Phillies Baseball devotee, and a triathlon competitor. Recently, he discovered a passion for volunteering at a horse rescue, where he claimed the horses were the only ones who could keep up with his quick wit.

Stephen’s humor was as legendary as his military career. He could find the funny in the mundane and had a knack for lightening the most somber of rooms. He was passionate about life and loved fiercely. His laughter was a symphony that resonated in the hearts of those who knew him, and his love was a beacon that guided his family through life’s challenges.

He leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter in his wife, Theresa Henderson, who matched his passion step for step. His sons, Dominic, and Colton Henderson, inherit his zest for life and his ability to find joy in every moment. His mother, Patricia Quigley, and sister, Jennifer Henderson, will forever remember Stephen as the family’s anchor and comedian, always ready with a joke or a helping hand.

Stephen’s life was a testament to the power of passion and humor. He met life’s battles with the same courage and determination that he did his military ones and reminded us all to face our struggles with a grin. His story is not just one of a decorated soldier, but of a man who lived, loved, and laughed with all his might.

As we bid farewell to Stephen Michael Henderson, let us not mourn the loss but celebrate the time we were lucky enough to share with this remarkable man. He taught us that life, like a good joke, is all about the delivery, and Stephen delivered a life well-lived with every step, every salute, and every punchline. Carry on, Command Sergeant Major, and keep the heavens roaring with your laughter.
