The presence and participation of the San Antonio Patriot Guard Riders has been requested to take part in this joyous event. We have been asked to ride a procession and stand a Flag Line for the veteran and family to participate in a “Key Awarding Ceremony” presented by Homes For Our Troops (HFOT). This ceremony will be the final presentation of a specially adapted mortgage free home for Army SGT Joe Lopez and Family.

Jose “Joe” Lopez joined the Army to support an ill family member. He enlisted in 2005, deploying to Afghanistan in 2007.

On Jan. 3, 2008, during his first combat deployment, Sergeant Lopez was serving as a cavalry scout with the 4-73 CAV, 82nd Airborne Division, when he fell into a burning pit while pushing a child out of the way of a rolling vehicle. SGT Lopez sustained severe burns to over 30 percent of his body, crushing injuries to his legs, and smoke inhalation.

After a week of being treated at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Joe’s lungs collapsed, and he spent months in a coma. Doctors told Joe’s parents that if he survived, their son would not walk or talk. After nine months of rehabilitation, Joe miraculously recovered and regained his ability to speak and walk short distances.

Although Joe continues to make progress in his recovery, he still relies on his wheelchair because he has to undergo frequent surgeries. Receiving a specially adapted custom Homes For Our Troops home will enable him to access every part of his home in a wheelchair, especially his children’s rooms. He is limited in what he can do in his current living environment because the hallways and doorways are too narrow. Regaining his freedom and independence will enable Joe to host more family gatherings and create a home gym. The financial freedom of a donated home will give him the stability to start a nonprofit that takes Veterans on hunting and fishing trips. He currently volunteers with Texas Hunters for Heroes South Texas, where he goes on hunting trips with other HFOT Veterans. He would also like to start his own catering business.

Joe says receiving an HFOT home is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that would not be possible without the generosity of the American people. “For us Veterans, the war we have gone through has never ended, as I am reminded every time I look at my scars. It is assuring to know that there are still humanity and people who care. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

US Army Major Yancy Baer

Growing up in a small town in Oklahoma, Yancy Baer was searching for a career that would provide him with growth and opportunity. After talking to a few recruiters, he decided to join the military. He enlisted in the Army as an Infantryman, and was commissioned through the Green to Gold program, which gives Soldiers the opportunity to earn a degree and become a second lieutenant.

In November 2009, during his fourth combat deployment, Major Baer was serving with the 10th Special Forces Group when he sustained severe damage to his left heel during a landing incident in a rotary wing aircraft while conducting operations in Iraq. Throughout his service he also sustained other injuries including severe damage to his right knee and a traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Once he returned to the United States, Yancy underwent surgery on his left heel, which was broken. Doctors replaced his bone with one from an organ donor. After a third surgery, doctors discovered a malignant tumor in the donor bone in Yancy’s heel, requiring him to undergo chemotherapy. Five months into his treatment, doctors amputated his left leg.

Yancy works as an electrical superintendent for a solar company. He is an avid Star Wars fan and has a very large collection of vintage Star Wars merchandise, which will be on display in his new home. He also enjoys skydiving, scuba diving, and riding his motorcycle.

Though Yancy has made an impressive recovery, he is finding it increasingly challenging to do simple tasks like laundry, bathing, and hobbies in his current home since it is two stories and not wheelchair accessible. Receiving a single-level, specially adapted custom home from Homes For Our Troops will be crucial to Yancy’s continued quality of life. Most importantly, Yancy is looking forward to having a forever home. “This home will enable me to finally settle into my retirement home and give me peace of mind that I will have a comfortable place to live out my life.”

Originally from Oklahoma, Yancy is choosing to build his home in Texas for the sense of community and friends in the area.

Yancy says he cannot thank HFOT’s donors and supporters enough. “Your contributions change the lives of injured service men and women directly by providing a home, a foundation, for them and their families. You provide them with comfort, peace of mind, and safety. Your service, in the form of donations and support, is just as great of a service and sacrifice that they have made. They served their country to ensure our freedoms are not lost and you served your country by supporting HFOT to ensure they continue to live with those freedoms.”

The San Antonio Patriot Guard Riders have been asked to escort the remains of Ruby Alline (Ross) Hutchinson to Ozona, Texas. The West Texas Patriot Guard will meet us at the Sunoco Gas Station in Ozona.

April 24, 1936 – March 31, 2015, Ruby Alline (Ross) Hutchison 78, passed away on March 31, 2015, surrounded by her family and friends after a brief illness. She will be sorely missed.

Ruby was born in Chattanooga, Tenn., April 24, 1936, to Luther and Bertha Ross. She was one of four children. Ruby graduated from Ringgold High School, Ringgold, Ga., before joining the United States Air Force in July 1954. She proudly served her country as a member of the 1120th Support Group-Headquarters Command, U.S. Air Force where she was assigned to the Pentagon until her honorable discharge in October of 1960. While assigned to the Pentagon she met and married her husband Keith M. Hutchison in 1957. She and her family moved to Alamogordo in 1970. Where she joined the civil service and began working as an editorial typist for the Joint Training Squadron Holloman Air Force Base, until her retirement in 1987.

She is survived by her three children Keith A. Hutchison of Alamogordo, Lee H. Hutchison and his wife Trina as well as their children in Chattanooga Tenn., Kathryn L. Hutchison and her sons formally of Alamogordo. She is also survived by her sister Betty J. Pell and her husband Fred of Chattanooga Tenn., along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, their husbands and wives as well as their children.

Alline is preceded in death by her father Luther L Ross, brother Charles Edward (Eddie) Ross, her husband of more than 30 years Keith M Hutchison, her mother Bertha J Ross, brother-in-law Frank Simerley and her sister Ethel Simerley.

“HOME FOR OUR TROOPS (HFOT’s) KEY AWARD CEREMONY”

After serving three years with the Army as an Infantryman, Chad enlisted in the Navy after the 9/11 attacks as a Cryptologic Technician.

On September 11, 2005, during his first combat deployment, Chad was serving with the 42nd Infantry Division, as part of a Cryptologic Support Team in Tikrit, Iraq when he was hit during a mortar attack. This resulted in the loss of both of his legs above the knee and other injuries.

Now, Chad works as an analyst for the Department of Defense. He enjoys spending time with his wife Beshka and their two college-age children, Riley, and Logan. Although Chad has an active lifestyle, living in a non-adapted home makes daily life challenging, especially as he ages. His current home is multilevel, limiting his mobility.

A specially adapted custom home will give Chad a safe place to rest and recover after a long day of work. An avid cook, he looks forward to adaptations such as pull-down shelving, roll under counters, and an accessible stove top, all features that will allow him to safely cook meals for his family.

Chad enjoys hunting with fellow HFOT Veterans and through them, he has witnessed firsthand the impact of an HFOT home. The financial freedom of a donated home will allow him to spend more time with his family and on his hobbies. “Once we get settled in our home, I’d like to find an old car or truck to restore after I retire,” he says.

Chad is choosing to build his home in Texas where he currently lives.

Chad would like HFOT donors and supporters to know they are changing lives. “Homes For Our Troops is a life changing opportunity. This home will make all the difference for me in the coming years.”

Honor Flight San Antonio (HFSA) is a non-profit organization created solely to honor America’s Veterans for all their sacrifices. Honor Flight Network transports our heroes to Washington, D.C. to visit and reflect at their memorials. Top priority is given to the senior veterans – World War II survivors, along with those other veterans who may be terminally ill. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, an estimated 640 WWII veterans die each day. Our time to express our thanks to these brave men and women is running out.

“HOME FOR OUR TROOPS (HFOT’s) KEY AWARD CEREMONY”

Alberto Flores joined the military as an Infantryman to support his family, and quickly fell in love with the camaraderie and brotherhood he shared with his fellow Marines. On May 12, 2005, Lance Corporal Flores was on his second combat deployment with Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines in Ramadi, Iraq when his vehicle hit an improvised explosive device (IED). He sustained severe damage to his right leg.

Airlifted to Landstuhl, Germany where he spent ten days, Alberto was transported to Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland. Due to multiple infections, his leg was amputated above the knee. Alberto received his prosthetic leg at Brooke Army Medical Center, relearning how to walk over a six-month period under the guidance of his physical therapist team.

Now medically retired, Alberto and his wife, Elvira, whom he met in the eighth grade, have been married for over twenty-five years. They enjoy spending time with their son, Alberto Flores III, and grandson, Aden, as well as their close-knit extended family. At least once a week, they host a barbecue, and love to play games and share meals with their loved ones. Their current house is multilevel, making it difficult for Alberto to navigate inside and outside in his wheelchair. He is often forced to wear his prosthetic for long periods, causing pain and further injury to his leg.

A specially adapted custom home from Homes For Our Troops will allow Alberto to cook for the family and help with daily tasks. The Gold Star Families Memorial Monument

Initially the Foundation’s goal was to establish a Gold Star Families Memorial Monument in Woody’s home state of West Virginia. Once that monument was complete, a new mission became clear to Woody and those at the Woody Williams Foundation to establish these monuments in as many communities as possible in all 50 states and U.S. territories.

Gold Star Families Memorial Monuments are a two-sided tribute made of black granite. One side bears the words: Gold Star Families Memorial Monument, a tribute to Gold Star Families and Relatives who sacrificed a Loved One for our Freedom.

The other side tells a story through the four granite panels: Homeland, Family, Patriot, and Sacrifice. At the center of this tribute, is a silhouette of a saluting service member which represents the Legacy of the Loved Ones who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our Freedom. Together, these features tell each community’s unique story based upon the Pillars of the Foundation.
