“HOME FOR OUR TROOPS (HFOT’s) KEY AWARD CEREMONY”
The presence and participation of the San Antonio Patriot Guard Riders has been requested to take part in this joyous event. We have been asked to ride a procession and stand a Flag Line for the veteran and family to participate in a “Key Awarding Ceremony” presented by Homes For Our Troops (HFOT). This ceremony will be the final presentation of a specially adapted mortgage free home for Navy CTI2 Chad Kueser.
After serving three years with the Army as an Infantryman, Chad enlisted in the Navy after the 9/11 attacks as a Cryptologic Technician.
On September 11, 2005, during his first combat deployment, Chad was serving with the 42nd Infantry Division, as part of a Cryptologic Support Team in Tikrit, Iraq when he was hit during a mortar attack. This resulted in the loss of both of his legs above the knee and other injuries.
Now, Chad works as an analyst for the Department of Defense. He enjoys spending time with his wife Beshka and their two college-age children, Riley, and Logan. Although Chad has an active lifestyle, living in a non-adapted home makes daily life challenging, especially as he ages. His current home is multilevel, limiting his mobility.
A specially adapted custom home will give Chad a safe place to rest and recover after a long day of work. An avid cook, he looks forward to adaptations such as pull-down shelving, roll under counters, and an accessible stove top, all features that will allow him to safely cook meals for his family.
Chad enjoys hunting with fellow HFOT Veterans and through them, he has witnessed firsthand the impact of an HFOT home. The financial freedom of a donated home will allow him to spend more time with his family and on his hobbies. “Once we get settled in our home, I’d like to find an old car or truck to restore after I retire,” he says.
Chad is choosing to build his home in Texas where he currently lives.
Chad would like HFOT donors and supporters to know they are changing lives. “Homes For Our Troops is a life changing opportunity. This home will make all the difference for me in the coming years.”

This ceremony will be the final presentation of a specially adapted mortgage free home for Marine Lance Corporal (LCpl) Alberto Flores.
Alberto Flores joined the military as an Infantryman to support his family, and quickly fell in love with the camaraderie and brotherhood he shared with his fellow Marines. On May 12, 2005, Lance Corporal Flores was on his second combat deployment with Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines in Ramadi, Iraq when his vehicle hit an improvised explosive device (IED). He sustained severe damage to his right leg.
Airlifted to Landstuhl, Germany where he spent ten days, Alberto was transported to Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland. Due to multiple infections, his leg was amputated above the knee. Alberto received his prosthetic leg at Brooke Army Medical Center, relearning how to walk over a six-month period under the guidance of his physical therapist team.
Now medically retired, Alberto and his wife, Elvira, whom he met in the eighth grade, have been married for over twenty-five years. They enjoy spending time with their son, Alberto Flores III, and grandson, Aden, as well as their close-knit extended family. At least once a week, they host a barbecue, and love to play games and share meals with their loved ones. Their current house is multilevel, making it difficult for Alberto to navigate inside and outside in his wheelchair. He is often forced to wear his prosthetic for long periods, causing pain and further injury to his leg.
A specially adapted custom home from Homes For Our Troops will allow Alberto to cook for the family and help with daily tasks. The pull-down shelving in the kitchen, as well as the roll-under sink and countertop, and accessible appliances, will enable him to prepare meals safely. The open floor plan and wheelchair-accessible outdoor areas will allow Alberto and Elvira to comfortably do what they love most—spend time with their loved ones at home. Alberto is choosing to remain in Texas where he and Elvira have lived for over eighteen years.
Alberto would like to thank HFOT donors and supporters for making his daily life easier. “I am very thankful for their support and donations. Because of their generosity, my home life will become much easier. I would like to thank them for giving me a place where I can live freely and independently

HOME FOR OUR TROOPS (HFOT’s) COMMUNITY KICK OFF (CKO)
The presence and participation of the San Antonio Patriot Guard Riders has been requested to take part in this joyous event. We have been asked to ride a procession and stand a Flag Line for the veterans and family to participate in the opening ceremony presented by Homes For Our Troops (HFOT). This ceremony will begin the process of building a specially adapted mortgage free home for Army SGT Christopher Leverkuhn and his Family.
Christopher Leverkuhn joined the military to pay for his education. He enjoyed the routine and discipline of the Army.
On Jan. 2, 2004, during his first deployment, Sergeant Leverkuhn, a petroleum supply specialist, was serving with the 209th Quartermaster Company, United States Army Reserve when his vehicle was hit by an improvised explosive device (IED) in Ramadi, Iraq. SGT Leverkuhn lost his right leg below the knee and sustained other injuries in the blast.
Today, Chris and his wife Brooke are busy raising their four children, Caiden, Brooklyn, Adeline, and Avery. Chris volunteers with the nonprofit Operation Comfort, an organization that empowers Veterans to overcome the trauma of the past by focusing on the future. When Chris is not kicking the soccer ball around with his children, he enjoys playing sled hockey and cycling. Although he leads an active lifestyle, he faces daily obstacles within his current living environment. The family lives in a home on a steep hill, making it difficult to use a wheelchair or prosthetics inside and outside the home. Chris often uses crutches to navigate and risks falling.
Receiving a specially adapted custom Homes For Our Troops home with an open floor plan and accessible bathroom will alleviate Chris’ safety concerns and enable him to be the husband and father he desires to be. The freedom and independence Chris will regain in the home will give him more time to spend with his children. He looks forward to being able to safely play in the yard with them and having the space to pursue his hobby of woodworking. Without the stress of a non-accessible home, Chris and his family will be able to start planning for their future. Brooke would like to go back to school.
Chris and his family plan to remain in Texas where they currently live to be close to family and the good school systems.
Chris says it is hard to put into words the thanks he has for HFOT’s donors and supporters. “Thank you from the bottom of my heart for giving my family and me the opportunity to receive such an amazing gift. The impact you are making is life changing.”

We have been asked to ride a procession and stand a Flag Line for the veterans and family to participate in the opening ceremony presented by Homes For Our Troops (HFOT). This ceremony will begin the process of building a specially adapted mortgage free home for Staff Sergeant Orlando Gill and his Family.
In 1992, Orlando Gill enlisted in the Army after high school for camaraderie and brotherhood.
In August 2004, on his second deployment, Orlando was part of the 2nd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division that deployed directly from Korea to Iraq. On October 2nd of that year, Staff Sergeant Gill was on patrol with Alpha Battery, 2nd Battalion, 17th Field Artillery when he was struck in the leg by a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG). He sustained severe injuries to his leg and hearing loss in his right ear.
Orlando was airlifted to a combat hospital where his right leg was amputated. Once stabilized, he was sent to Landstuhl, Germany, then transported to Walter Reed Medical Center (WRMC) where he underwent revision surgery and received additional treatment. During his rehabilitation, Orlando met his future wife Maria, a physical therapist at WRMC, who served in the military for over two decades.
Orlando and Maria are proud parents to a son, Darius. They share a love of the outdoors and traveling. Their current living environment is an older home with narrow hallways and doorways. Orlando is unable to turn around in his wheelchair and often must rely on Maria to help him navigate from room to room.
A specially adapted custom home from Homes For Our Troops will give Orlando the freedom and independence to access the entire home, including the garage and outside areas. “Our lives are going to change dramatically because of this home,” he says. “It’s a godsend and a blessing.”
Orlando is choosing to build his home in Maria’s home state of Texas.
Orlando would like to thank HFOT donors and supporters for their compassion and generosity. “My wife and I are blessed to have people like you who care about us. We never would have been able to have a home that gives me complete access and independence. This is beyond a dream.”

This ceremony will begin the process of building a specially adapted mortgage free home for Army SFC Rudy Velasquez and his Family.
Rudy Velasquez Jr. was inspired by his father, a Vietnam War Veteran, to serve his country. In 2007, several years after finishing high school, he enlisted in the Army.
On June 9, 2012, Sergeant First Class Velasquez was serving in Afghanistan on his second combat tour as a Section Chief with Alpha Battery, 2-77 Field Artillery, 4th Brigade, 4th Infantry Division, when an artillery blast knocked him unconscious during an enemy attack. Rudy finished his tour, but the effects of the severe concussions he suffered continued to progress. He was later medically retired due to these combat-related injuries, including traumatic brain injury (TBI) and significant vision loss.
Now medically retired, Rudy and his wife, Jenny, have four children, Rudy Velasquez III, Jaxon, Vida, and Gianna. A close-knit family, they enjoy playing games and having weekly movie nights. Rudy faces many obstacles in the family’s current home because of the loss of his peripheral vision and depth perception. The cramped floor plan, as well as the lack of adequate lighting, are safety hazards. He often must count steps to know where he is, particularly in the non-adapted kitchen with hanging light fixtures and slippery flooring.
Receiving a specially adapted custom home from Homes For Our Troops with an open floor plan, custom chair molding/hand railings, voice, and motion-activated appliances, lights and thermostats, keyless door locks, and magnetic door stops will allow Rudy to safely walk from room to room in his home during the day and at night. He is looking forward to the level walkway with tactile delineators around the perimeter of the house, which will give him the freedom and independence to move in and out of the home safely and securely. The mortgage-free home will also reduce stress in the family and allow them to spend more time together doing the activities they enjoy.
Rudy is choosing to remain in Texas to be near his family.
Rudy would like HFOT donors and supporters to know the impact they have on the lives of Veterans. “Thank you for what you do for Soldiers. The road to recovery is a long one, as is the transition to civilian life. With the help and support you provide; we know there are people like you that have our backs. You are making an incredible impact on Veterans and their families, and no words will ever be able to express my gratitude—you are changing our lives.”
