CONFIRMED: Thomas Preston Green, Retired, Veteran, US Air Force, WWII/Korea (1-24) 4 Jan 24 @ Brookehill Funeral Home | San Antonio | Texas | United States

US AIR FORCE RETIRED VETERAN – WWII, KOREAN WAR

The family of Mr. Thomas Preston Green, a US Air Force (Ret.) Veteran, requests the presence and participation of the San Antonio Patriot Guard at the services and LEO supported procession, and graveside rendering of military honors of their loved one. We are honored to accept this invitation.

Msgt Thomas “Tommy” Preston Green, USAF retired was born on January 5th, 1923, in Springhope, North Carolina. He enlisted in the military in 1942. First in the Army, and then later, in 1947, when the Air Force was created. He was active during World War II, the Berlin Air Lift, and Korea. He was stationed at many different bases around the world during his career. While he was stationed at Lackland AFB around 1952 he became lifelong friends with Louis L Nicholson, Jr. who introduced him to his sister, Phylis Nicholson. On April 5th, 1953, in a small ceremony at the First Christian Church in El Dorado Kansas (where Phylis was from) they married and immediately left for Springhope NC to meet his relatives. They did not waste any time in starting a family and on March 21, 1954, Melody Ann was born in San Antonio, Texas. In May of that same year, he left for Korea. He always said that was the coldest place on earth. Several years later, on April 9, 1958, while stationed in Elgin AFB in Florida, their second daughter, Melinda Sue, was born.

He served in many interesting and diverse places during his military service. Selma, Alabama, during a time when segregation was evident, Lajes AFB in the Azores, an island off the coast of Portugal, during the Cuban Missile Crisis, where at that time, Khrushchev threatened to fire nuclear missiles and destroy that base. Later he was assigned to Andrews AFB while John F Kennedy was President. On November 22, 1963, when JFK was assassinated and flown back to Andrews AFB, he was there to salute the plane.

After retiring from active service in June 1964, his family settled in San Antonio, Texas. He owned an Enco station, Tommy’s Enco, and even sponsored a little league team at the Five Diamonds for several years. He also worked for the US Postal Service for a few years before going into Civil Service and working at Kelly AFB Security Service. In total, he served our country for 33 years. He never really retired and always had his hands in something. He was a man of great faith and made sure everyone knew he loved the Lord.

US AIR FORCE RETIRED VETERAN – VIETNAM ERA

The family of Mr. Maynard Hayes, a US Air Force (Ret.) Veteran, requests the presence and participation of the San Antonio Patriot Guard at the services and LEO supported procession, and graveside rendering of military honors of their loved one. We are honored to accept this invitation.

Maynard George “Bud” Hayes, age 80, of Schertz, Texas passed away on Sunday, November 26, 2023. Bud was born on December 24th, 1942, in White Salmon, Washington, to William and Mildred (Draine) Hayes. The youngest of three siblings, with an older brother, Dick, and sister, Darla, he spent his early years in Wyoming and Montana, eventually graduating from Clyde Park High School in 1961. Bud initially aimed to become a veterinarian but shifted gears in 1961, joining the US Air Force. His early military service involved working as Security Police, stationed at various bases such as Weathersfield, Mildenhall, and Lakenheath in England. Later, he transitioned into Manpower, serving at locations like Dover, Delaware; Anchorage, Alaska; the Air Force Academy in Colorado; Alconbury A.F.B. in England; and Randolph Air Force Base in Texas.

During his time in Weathersfield, Bud met Jean, his first wife, with whom he had two children, Billy, and Tracy. In 1972, while stationed in Alaska, Bud married his second wife, Sherry, and together they had four children: Scott, Richard, Thomas, and Erin. While in England, Bud and Sherry met and “adopted” Maria. Bud married his third wife, Cheryl, in 1989, expanding his family with Cheryl’s daughter, Danielle.

Bud concluded his military career as a Chief Master Sergeant in 1989. Post-military life saw him briefly working as a probation officer and Middle School teacher before venturing into a successful carpentry career, eventually leading to the ownership of his own trim carpentry business. Bud officially retired in 2015, at the age of 73.

Bud was an extremely generous and compassionate man — who never met a stranger — and was always eager to help a friend in need. He actively participated in his children’s extracurricular activities, coaching little league teams for almost two decades — assisting with the BVYA, and being the maestro of the concession stand — as well as volunteering in various roles during his children’s school years.

Bud was also known as a great communicator — from debriefing Generals, and other high-ranking brass, while in the Air Force, to writing short stories, or the endless stories and jokes he would entertain his family and friends with. He also enjoyed many callings with the LDS church — as Attendance Clerk, working with the church’s Boy Scout troop, teaching Sunday School, working with the Young Men’s group, and serving as a Home Teacher.

Bud was preceded in death by his parents and brother. He is survived by his wife, Cheryl; 8 children – Billy, Tracy, Maria (Mark), Scott (Lisa), Richard (Rebecca), Danielle, Thomas (Christine), and Erin (Mike); 15 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; as well as his sister, Darla, and sister-in-law, Betty.

CONFIRMED: Dan Pena, Veteran, US Army, Vietnam Era (105-24) 20 May 24 @ Porter Loring Mortuaries | San Antonio | Texas | United States

US ARMY VETERAN – VIETNAM ERA

The family of Mr. Dan Pena, a US Army Veteran, requests the presence and participation of the San Antonio Patriot Guard at the services and LEO supported procession, and graveside rendering of military honors of their loved one. We are honored to accept this invitation.

Dan Pena, a dedicated veteran, public servant, avid fisherman and faithful Christian, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2024, at the age of 74. His wife, Susan, was at his side.

Dan was born in Petersburg, Virginia, while his father, First Sergeant (Ret) Dan P. Pena was stationed at Ft. Lee. Dan graduated from Mary Carroll High School, Corpus Christi, Tx in 1968. He played alto sax in the band. He earned his associate’s degree in drafting from Del Mar College, Corpus Christi, Texas.

He then proudly served in the U.S. Army as a construction draftsman. He was stationed at Ft. Stewart, Georgia. After serving his country, he returned to Corpus Christi, Texas. He worked at a number of places including Reynolds Aluminum and Brown and Root. Dan then moved to San Antonio, Texas working as a CAD operator for Fraser Associates Architects. Dan then found his forever career with The Texas Department of Transportation where he made significant contributions as the District Bridge Inspection Coordinator. He retired in 2015, after 30 years of service.

Throughout his life, Dan exemplified selflessness and compassion. Nine years ago, he underwent a life-saving lung transplant, a courageous decision that not only prolonged his own life, but also offered hope to others. Even in death, Dan continued his legacy of giving by donating portions of his skin, bones, and blood vessels, ensuring his spirit of generosity would live on through the lives he touched.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dan’s true passion lay in the tranquil sport of fishing. Whether casting a line on a quiet pond or sharing stories with fellow anglers, he found solace and joy in the simplicity of nature’s beauty.

Dan was a long-time member of Madison Hills Baptist Church. He especially enjoyed the time spent in bible study with his group, affectionately called, “The Tuesday Night Second Chance Men’s Group” since so many also had dealt with life threatening health issues.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ora Meza Pena, and Dan P. Pena; and brother, Nathaniel Pena. Dan is survived by his wife of 30 years, Susan Pena; son, Michael C. Pena; daughter, Charmaine M. Pena Hurley; stepchildren, Shannon Terrell, and husband Scott and LTC (Ret) Brian Santos and wife Erin; brothers, Ronald Pena, and wife Zuelema, Maurice Pena and wife Teresa; sisters, Nelda Pena, Loretta Haggard, and Irene Miller; 6 grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

We wish to thank the doctors, PA’s, nurses and staff of University Hospital Lung Transplant Clinic as well as Dr. Christine Toth for the excellent care they provided Dan.

Dan will be fondly remembered by family, friends, and colleagues for his unwavering dedication, kind spirit, and love for life and God. He leaves behind a legacy of service, sacrifice, and kindness that will continue to inspire all those who knew him.

In honoring Dan’s memory, let us cherish the moments shared, the lessons learned, and the profound impact he had on the lives of others. May he rest in peace, forever casting his line in the peaceful waters of eternity.

US AIR FORCE VETERAN

The family of Mrs. Lura Vanzant, a US Air Force Veteran, requests the presence and participation of the San Antonio Patriot Guard at the LEO supported procession, and graveside rendering of military honors of their loved one. We are honored to accept this invitation.

Lura Vanzant was born in Coffeyville KS on 4 February 1933. Her family moved several times, due to her father’s work and they spent several years in Oklahoma where she received most of her public education. Lura joined the Air Force in October 1951. Among her many memorable moments as an airman was being chosen straight out of Basic Training at Lackland AFB to replace the Base Commander’s secretary, due to her one year of college and civilian experience. When fellow recruits graduated and went home for Christmas, Lura spent her two-week Christmas break being driven by staff car to/from work for the General. She spent most of her career stationed at Ft. Meyer, Virginia, performing clerical and administrative duties for the Special Activities unit in the Pentagon.

Lura left active military service in 1954 and was immediately hired as a civilian employee. In 1963, Lura married Korean War veteran James Vanzant whose civil service work, like Lura’s, involved using a Dictaphone to transpose official records. She flourished in her gatekeeper role as the Lackland AFB Pharmacy Secretary, denying then the future President Lyndon B. Johnson his medication until he provided proper credentials. When asked by his security detail if she knew who he was, “General Lee” (as she was affectionately referred to by pharmacy coworkers) responded that he “looked familiar.” After a rewarding career on military active duty and 35 years in Civil Service, Lura retired in San Antonio TX. In 2003, she moved to Blanco to be with family, after experiencing health issues. She volunteered at the Blanco Library, local museum, and was the oldest member of both American Legion Post 352 and Auxiliary Unit 352, upon her passing on 6 May 2024. She was surrounded by her loving family when she passed peacefully, to be with our Father in Heaven.

Lura “Mom” was a true patriot, inspiration, and joy to all she encountered. She will be greatly missed! She and her late husband shared nine children, eleven grandchildren, twenty-one great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren: Sandy Vanzant (passed) and children Jeff Frazier and Kristen (& Nicholas) Edwards Bobby (& Betty) Vanzant and children: Jennifer (& Michael) Segulia and children Alex, Ian (& Destinee), Morgann and her son Leo; Jessica (& David) Vega and children Rebecca and Sophia; Melody (& Matt) Ferstler and children Jakob and Grayson, Margie Vanzant (passed), Jerry Vanzant, Judy Vanzant (& Chris) Lopez and children, Corey (& Elise) Lopez and their children Reese and Lennox; Kelly (& Matthew) Malik and daughter Emerson (Emme), Richard Greene, Randi (& Teddy) Weeks and children: Christopher (& Patricia) and children Davisto and Alicia; Jennifer (& Shane) Johnson and children Ashley Andreason, Alexandria (& Austen) Pettis and their kids Jordy, Harper, and Charlotte; Emily (& Jack) Bennett; and William; Robert (& Dawn) and sons Danny, David, and Matthew
