US ARMY RETIRED VETERAN – VIETNAM
The family of Mr. Howard Chun, a US Army (Ret.) Veteran, requests the presence and participation of the San Antonio Patriot Guard at the graveside rendering of military honors of their loved one. We are honored to accept this invitation.
Howard Henry Chun, 88, passed away on August 25, 2024, at home in San Antonio, Texas. He was born May 19, 1936, in New York City. He was the second of three sons born to Henry and Foo Yen Chun.
Howard spent his youth in Chinatown, going to school, working in a restaurant, and helping his family make ends meet. He attended City College of New York, where he received his commission as a Second Lieutenant in the US Army Engineer Corps. He spent the next five decades serving on active duty and in the reserves to include time in Vietnam before retiring as a Colonel in Fort Sheridan, IL.
After he left active duty, Howard and his young family settled in Chicago. He spent several decades there building community, working in IT, and pursuing his love of learning new things. He loved archery, shooting, gardening, videography, playing the flute, reading, watching movies, and listening to classical music. He never missed the opportunity to feed people, just ask anyone who went out to eat with him or attended one of his BBQs. He spent countless hours along with his wife Grace and many others helping to establish the Chinese American Museum there in Chicago’s Chinatown. After his move to San Antonio, he continued to garden, explored Buddhism, and adopted a “supermutt” named Zoey.
Howard is survived by his sons, Christopher, and Jonathan; daughter-in-law, Ginger; and 2 grandchildren, Marceline, and Zachary. He was preceded in death by his wife Grace in 2020.
Howard positively impacted too many lives to count and will be missed.
