US ARMY RETIRED VETERAN – OPERATION ENDURING FREEDOM
The family of Mr. David L. Kolar, a US Army (Ret.) Veteran, requests the presence and participation of the San Antonio Patriot Guard at the graveside rendering of military honors of their loved one. We are honored to accept this invitation.
Major David Lewis Kolar (Ret.), devoted husband, proud father, Army officer, and lifelong public servant, passed away peacefully on June 29, 2026, at the age of 74. Dave was born on June 10, 1952, in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, to Henry and Rosemarie (Buchan) Kolar. One of four brothers, he grew up in a close-knit family where he developed a curious mind, a love of history, and a quiet determination that would guide him throughout his life.
A 1970 graduate of Bishop McCort High School in Johnstown, Dave went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts in German from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown in 1974. He later earned a Master of Business Administration from Western New England College in 1982, demonstrating his lifelong commitment to learning and personal growth.
Dave proudly served his country in the United States Army for 37 years, from 1975 until his retirement in 2012. He began his military career on active duty before continuing his service in the Army Reserve and Army National Guard, ultimately attaining the rank of Major. Throughout his career, he served as a Signal Intelligence/Electronic Warfare Officer and an Intelligence Officer.
During his distinguished military career, he served with the 1st Infantry Division (“The Big Red One”), the 9th Infantry Division, the Military Intelligence Corps, U.S. Army Element Central Command (CENTCOM), and the 649th Military Intelligence Battalion. He deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and completed advanced military education through numerous prestigious military institutions.
In recognition of his leadership, dedication, and faithful service; Dave received numerous military decorations, including the Meritorious Service Medal (3 Awards), Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal (2 Awards), Army Good Conduct Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, Army Superior Unit Award, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Armed Forces Reserve Medal with “M” Device and Silver Hourglass, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and Korea Defense Service Medal.
Alongside his military service, Dave also built a distinguished civilian career with the Department of Defense, serving as an Intelligence Analyst at Security Hill, Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio for 40 years. Together, his military and civilian careers spanned decades of dedicated service to the nation, during which he quietly helped protect our nation’s security with professionalism, integrity, and an unwavering sense of duty. Respected by his colleagues for his knowledge, leadership, and humility, he was honored as both Civilian of the Quarter and Civilian of the Year.
While Dave was deeply committed to his career, his greatest joy came from the simple moments in life. He loved studying history—especially World War II—trains, building model cars, reading, tackling odd projects around the house, planning the annual pumpkin display for Halloween with his daughter, Christine, and taking road trips with his family. Sundays in the fall were reserved for cheering on the Pittsburgh Steelers, and every year he proudly rooted for the Army in the annual Army–Navy football game. He had a fondness for Hawaiian shirts, an ever-growing collection of colorful and outrageous socks, and a steady supply of classic dad jokes that somehow never stopped making an appearance. One of Dave’s greatest companions was the family’s beloved dachshund, Luna, who was always happiest curled up beside him.
Those who knew Dave will remember his quiet strength, unwavering dedication to his family, thoughtful nature, steadfast character, and gift for making others smile. He found joy in life’s little traditions and left behind countless memories that will continue to bring smiles to those who loved him.
Dave is survived by his loving wife, Britta T. Kolar; his daughter, Christine T. Kolar; his brothers, Donald Kolar and Joseph Kolar; and many extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Rosemarie Kolar, and his brother, Jim Kolar.
In honor of his wonderful sense of humor and his famous collection of colorful socks, the family invites those attending either service to wear their silliest or most colorful pair. He wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has offered prayers, kindness, love, and support during this difficult time. Your compassion and presence have been a source of great comfort and are deeply appreciated.
Whether wearing a military uniform, quietly helping protect our nation’s security as a civilian, or simply at home making his family laugh, Dave answered the same calling each day: serving something greater than himself.
Dave’s legacy of service, loyalty, humor, and love for his family will continue to live on in all who had the privilege of knowing him. To his daughter, Christine, he was simply Dad—a constant source of encouragement, curiosity, and the kind of dad whose jokes never stopped, no matter how much she rolled her eyes. She will carry those memories—and his love—with her always.
His journey may have ended, but his story—and the lives he touched through his service, kindness, laughter, and unwavering love—will remain with us always. He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and always remembered.

1. Iron horses if you can, cages are always welcome and appreciated and unless under special circumstances not allowed in processions. You do not have to have a motorcycle to participate in honoring our veterans.
2. Safety First: Please remember to properly hydrate (including the night before) before any outdoor activity and to dress appropriately. Do not hesitate to take a break at any time if you feel you need to get in the shade or get indoors and always ask for help at any time. Also please do not forget your sun screen.
3. Please remember that our mission is to stand tall and silent, and with honor and. NO TALKING, SMOKING, CHEWING OF TOBACCO PRODUCTS, OR CELL PHONE USE IN THE FLAG LINE!

Funeral Processions/Escorts
EVERY RIDER IS SOLELY RESPONSIBLE for their own safety at all times while riding in a funeral procession.
At NO TIME are any riders authorized to block any intersection or otherwise block or impede traffic laws in any way. Only Law Enforcement officials are authorized to block and/or impeded the lawful flow of traffic.
If you choose to fly a Flag on your bike you are SOLELY RESPONSIBLE for ensuring it is secured and not a danger to any other rider or traffic.
